Joan Maddock is well into her eighties. I don’t know her exact age because nobody really knows. She never told her children, likely because she is older than her husband Dean (Grandpa Maddock).
Grandma has had Alzheimer’s for over a decade. It had been even longer than that since I had seen her last when I traveled to Florida to visit both my grandparents this past June. In fact the last time we saw each other I was small enough to be held in her arms.
Being in the late stages of Alzheimer’s Grandma Maddock can’t carry on a conversation and tends to answer everything in pleasantries. “Oh isn’t that nice.” “Well dear…”
But as a testament to the strange ways of the mind, when I saw Grandma Maddock for the first time in nearly 20 years she hugged me, held me in her arms and tickled my nose as if I hadn’t aged one minute since our last visit.
(This video is footage of Grandma and Grandpa Maddock shot by Uncle Glenn down in Florida).
